About the Program:
JoyRide Equestrian is partnering with the Positive Attitude Youth Center (PAYC) to teach horsemanship and riding to youth, many of whom would not otherwise have this opportunity.
Through working with horses, these young people are learning the values of communication, mutual respect, and partnership, among the many other benefits all horse people know. For most of them, working with horses is a brand new experience, full of joy and the opportunity for growth of confidence and skills.
This project was spearheaded by Katie Zinke, a student at Elon University. We began in Fall 2020 as a 4-week pilot program for just a few participants, and then ran a 12-week session in the Spring 2021. Though we originally expected 4 participants per session, we had several participants from 2020 ask to return, bringing our number to 7.
Each semester costs about $5000, which covers costs for the entire semester including the horses’ expenses, insurance, new safety equipment to further improve the Program, and paying certified and experienced staff.
Thank you so much to everyone who contributed!!
